Notes for Captain Joseph Collins:

According to "Spotsylvania Records", from Virginia's Militia Order Book for 1738-1749, he was a gentleman planter who was commissioned as "1st Lieutenant of a troop of Horse under Captain Joseph Hawkins in the Colonial Militia of Spotsylvania County, Virginia before the Court of His Majesty's Honourable Justices for the county on December 6, 1743".  On November 6, 1750 he was promoted to Captain of Foot Soldiers.

In the name of God Amen, I Joseph Collins of the county of Spotsylvania being sick and weak, but of sound and perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the uncertainty of this transitory life do make this my last will and Testament in manner ?? form following, first I commend my soul to Almighty God and my body to the earth to be decently buried, and as to what worldly estate it hat please God to bless me with I give and bequeath in the following manner: 

It is my will, that my just Debts and funeral expenses to first paid.  I give unto my Grad Daughter, Amy Collins, one cow and calf and the sum of five pounds current money, to be paid unto her when she arrives at the age of twenty one years or on the Day of her marriage.

I lend unto my beloved wife Susana Collins my whole estate of Teal and ?? for and during the term of her widowhood, and after her marriage or death.  It is my will and desire that my executor hereafter named do sell my whole estate both real and per?? At public auction, and I do hereby give that money arriving by the sale of my land to be equally divided between my four sons James Collins, William Collins, Thomas Collins and Lewis Collins and out of the money arriving by the sale of my Negroes and other estate I give the sum of ten pounds current money to each of my daughters, Ann Wisdom, Mary Brockman, Susanna Golson, Tabitha Gatewood, Drucilla Cook and Catey Glass and if any thing remains after such ?? are paid, I give the same to be equally divided between my children, John Collins, James Collins, William Collins, Thomas Collins, Lewis Collins, Ann Wisdom, Mary Brockman, Susanna Gholson, Tabitha Gatewood, Druicilla Cook, Catey Glass.

Notes for Lewis Collins:

He served a total of three different times during the Revolutionary War as best as can be determined from his statement when he applied for a pension.  He was a farmer and served upon demand and as bringing in the crops allowed.  As part of his Revolutionary War service he fought the Cherokee Indians (who were fighting for the British) and in 1781 while marching from North Carolina to Charestown, South Carolina under the command of General Green he was enganged in a battle with the British and "took a great many prisoners" according to his statement.  His Revolutionary War pension number in the National Archieves is S21142.

His will, written September 16, 1783 reads as follows:

In the name of God Amen.  I Lewis Collins of the State of North Caroline in the County of Gransville being of sound health and memory but calling to mind the uncertainty of this life do make and ordan this my last will and Testament in manner of form following-

First ??  I give my soul to God who gave it trusting in the ?? of my Saviour Jesus Christ for perfect ?? of my time ?? my body to the ground to be disposed of at the discretion of my ?? hereafter named.

Item.  I give to my dearly beloved wife Elisabeth the tract of land of Dantatonnes?? I now live during his natural life and six negroes viz ?? Phimoth, Peg, Amey, ?? with the whole of my stock, ?? She my said wife complying with the following bequests. viz

Item.  I give and bequeath to my daughter Lois Gaden a negro wench named Voilet, a ??, bed of furniture, one ???? two cows and calves and the same ?? already delivered, but if it should please God that my said daughter to die without lawfull ?? then the estate given her to return to be divided among my other children.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my daughter Betsey Robinson in Virginia two negroes Friday and his youngest child w child I dont know the name of as its born since I delivered the woman with this future increase.  Also cattle, bed furniture with things are already delivered to here ??

Item.  I give and bequeath to my son Edward Collins a negro girl nammed Chores (one mare and saddle already delivered) one bed of furniture, two cows and calves to him his heirs ?? for ever.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my son Lewis Collins a negro boy named Josh with one horse and saddle one bed and furniture, two cows and calves to him his heirs and ?? for ever.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my son Wiley Collins a nego girl named Phibbie, one horse and saddle, one bed and furniture, two cows and calves and fifteen pounds ?? for schooling.  Dollars at six shillings to him his heirs of ?? for ever.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my daughter Diannah Carter Collins one negro boy named Isom, with one horse and saddle, one bed and furniture, two cows and calves also a seal skin trunk to her heirs of?? forever.

Item.  After the death of my said wife, the estate left or ?? I give to be divided mong my five children, Lois, Edward, Lewis, Wiley and Diannah Carter or their representatives but of any of them die without lawful issue then to those living or leaving issue except my land as I leave to my ????

In the name of God Amen, I George Gayden of the state of Mississippi and county of Amite being of perfect mind and memory (praise be God) do this 29th day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nineteen make and publish this my last will and testament, in manner following, that is to say:

I give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Rebeccah Batchelor a Negro girl named Violet.

The will of Elizabeth Gayden Morgan reads as follows:  I Elizabeth Morgan by the grace of God being of sound mind and dis??ing memory do make and constitute this my last will and testament hereby revoking and make void all former wills by me at any time heretofore one as to such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to entrust me with.

I wish that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my decease as possible and of the first money that shall come into the hands of my executons from ?? part of my estate.

I will and bequeath to my beloved son John G. Morgan the following Negro slaves “Jo ??” my woman Pend?? Aged about twenty two years, also her live boy children Felson and Zeke also our bed stand feathers, bed cover, clothing.

I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Diana Gockerham(??) and the lawful heirs of her body my Negro woman Ilane Betty aged about fourty years.

I will and bequeath to my beloved son Fielding Morgan and the lawful heirs of his body my Negro boy Haro Meridy aged about eighteen years.

I will and bequeath to my beloved son Hiram Morgan the following Negro slaves – my girl Elmira aged about eightenn years and the increase of her body, also my woman Clarrisa aged about forty, also my man Charles aged about forty.  I also give to my so Hiram my stock of cattle consisting of two cows and calves also one bead stance, feather bed and clothing.

I will and bequeath to my beloved son Wiley Morgan one hundred dollars to be paid to him by my executor out of any money arising from my estate

It is my will that the increase of the woman Pend?? Should there be any also go to my son John G. Morgan.

I further will and bequeath to my beloved sone John and Hiram Morgan all my household and kitchen furniture and all other property and effects that may be my possession at the time of my decease not hence before disposed of and equally divided between them and I do hereby ordain and appoint my son John G and Hiram Morgan executors of this my last will and testament.

Notes for William Morgan:

William Morgan represents the earliest entry for Mississippi members of this family history.  There are entries in "First Settlers of the Mississippi Territory" that indicate he was in Amite County region as early as 1803 and possibly earlier.  A William Morgan settled 319 acres near the waters of Bassett's Creek on the west side of the Tombigbee River.  There are entries also for Jordan, John, Thomas and James Morgan settling land and making claims around 1797).  Most likely, they were brothers and possibly his father who had moved into the territory.  William Morgan appears in the Mississippi Territorial Government ordered census of 1816 with "one male over 21, four males under 21and one female under 21 and one female over 21".  Incidently, the next entry in the 1816 state census is George Gayden.  Most likely they were neighbors.

In the name of God, Amen,

I William Morgan of the county of Amite in the State of Mississippi, being weak of body but of perfect mind and memory calling to mind the mortality of the body, that it is appointed for all men to die; do make, ordain and constitute this and no other my last will and testament in manner and form following , that is to say -

First of all it is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid out of my estate after which the following disposition be made of the same, to wit..

It is my will and desire that all my estate shall remain and be kept together on my plantation for the maintenance and education of my children, until my youngest sons William and Hiram Morgan arrives at the age of fourteen years at which time I wish all my estate both real and personal to be equally divided among my dearly beloved wife Elizabeth Morgan and all my children to wit – Phebe Morgan, Wilie Morgan, James Morgan, Fielden Morgan, Benjamin Morgan, John Morgan, Delania Morgan, William Morgan and Hiram Morgan, each one to share and share alike in equal degree, and should my dearly beloved wife marry before the aforesaid William and Hiram Morgan arrives at the age of fourteen years then and in that time or as soon thereafter as may convenient, I wish the aforesaid division to take place, each one sharing alike in manner aforesaid, in all my estate both real and personal.

It is my further will and desire that my son Fielden Morgan shall have the care and management of my plantation and hands, until a division shall take place the proceeds of which to go to the maintenance of my family.

I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my dearly beloved wife Elizabeth Morgan my Executrix until a division shall take place, and my son Wilie Morgan by Executor to carry into effect this my last will and testament.  Signed, sealed, pronounced and declared by the aforesaid William Morgan as his last will and testament, the twenty eighth day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty.

Notes for Wiley Pliney Morgan:

In a newspaper from the Woodville, Mississippi area that was discussing local community histories (dated March 23, 1975) provided by Judith Morgan Darby, there is an entry for a small community named Morgan.  "The site of Morgan, was once owned by a man named Waller, and later by his daughter, Mrs. Ed Lewis.  The Lewis family sold the land to Wyley Morgan, for whom the flag stop on the Y&MV Railroad was named.  Because of its location on the Louisiana state line, Morgan was onced used as

a quarantine sttion".

In The Woodville Republican dated March 6, 1886 a story ran describing an attempted assassination of Wiley Morgan.  On March 13 the newspaper reported that the suspect was found and brought back for justice.

The Woodville Republican on December 9, 1893 reported the death of Wiley Morgan in a hospital in Jackson, Mississippi.  "Mr. Morgan was born and reared in Amite City and was 53 (should have read 51) at the time of his death - with the exception of a few years in New Orleans he lived all of his life in Amite and Wilkinson counties.  He was a man of originality, and considerable intellectual force and of great industry and energy, and we have heard competent judges say they regarded him as the best planter in this county.  Mr. Morgan by ability and good management accumulated a large estate.  He leaves a wife and children to mourn his untimely death, who have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.  The remains were brought home and interred in the cemetery here".

Notes for Frank Elwin Morgan:

He and his wife, Zula, lived with his grandfather in Laurel Hill, Louisiana for two years and then moved to Zachary, Louisiana and started a grocery business.  "A wind storm decapitated the building..." and F.E. Morgan decided to move further north in Louisiana to Monroe, Ouachita Parish around 1890.  They then moved twenty miles west to Calhoun, Louisiana for two years, where their son, Frank Elwin, was born. They then settled in Ruston, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana. In Ruston Frank Morgan developed a successful grocery and wholesale operation.  He was married to Zula for 51 years until his death.

Notes for Zula M. Penny:

Zula Willemena (named for the Queen of the Netherlands in) was born on her father's plantation "Safety Dale", near Zachary, Louisiana.  She "was proud that one of her brothers, James Smiley Penny, had joined the Confederate army at 13 and served to the end.  Her two fighting brothers...were dubbed the "Black Pennies" because of their toughness in pulling through  hardships".

She received most of her education from her father who had lost his eye sight in his later years.  He would take the children into the yard under the large shade trees for their lessons".  Zula "pointed out that were no public schools after the Civil War, so it was through Joseph and his sister-in-law, who used a room in her father's large house for a little school, that she obtained an education.  When Zula was only 17 years old she was appointed to teach in Port Hudson.  She said "I had to pass a written examination to qualify, but I passed with high marks, a credit to my father's teaching". She was a long time member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (her National number was 185029) having joined in 1922 and was a member for 44 years until her death.

Her obituary on May 16, 1964 contained "Mrs. F.E. Morgan Sr., 97, died Friday in a Ruston hospital after a lengthy illness.  Mrs. Morgan was the last surviving granddaughter of the American Revolution, her family said.  She had also been a member of Trinity Methodist Church since 1896 (68 years).  Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the chapel of Spears Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery".

Notes for Virginia Noble Vaughan:

The author of this history remembers his grandmother, "Ginny", with the fondest memories and as much love as a grandson could have.  She appears as five years old in the 1910 census of Richland Parish.  After being married to Frank Morgan he then married Pete Koerner (he died before she).  She received her education from Whitworth College at Brookhaven, Mississippi and later her nursing training at Charity Hospital in Natchez, Mississippi.  She spent most of her later life in Jackson and was a member of the Capital Street United Methodist Church. Her funeral services were at Mulhearn Funeral Home in Rayville, Louisiana later followed by internment near her childhood home at the Alto Church.  The cemetery is situated in one of the most lovely southern settings possible with a white traditional church surrounded by mighty oaks covered with Spanish Moss. She is missed dearly by the entire family.
